The Ongoing Workplace Revolution
The last few years have been a big shift in how people approach their careers, with a reassessment of what is important and how we can focus more on working to live instead of living to work. Overall, I think there has been a healthy push back on the work culture since Covid that represents an important cultural revolution of how we view our jobs and how that fits into our life and the lives of our families. Movements like the "anti-work" movement are finding a stronghold because we live in a society that has fostered an unhealthy relationship with our jobs where employers use their positions of power to control people rather than build healthy, vibrant cultures. We are seeing the growth of unions, aiming to help people organize and fight back against corporations that value profit over people - and the unions are slowly finding success!
Right now there is a revolution ongoing in our jobs and in the workplace. In my career, I have helped a number of organizations work through change and deliver value through their organizations more effectively. I don't think the anti-work movement is what is best for people long term, but we have a major problem: companies continuously fail to support their people, and people in those companies fail to support their colleagues.
There are always better ways of achieving our goals. The reason for Worksoul and the impetus for building this site is to dive deep into exploring the relationship of people, work, and finding ways to nurture our lives by relentlessly searching for better ways of working. Thus comes the Worksoul mindset, where there is a way to integrate work and life so that people can achieve success in their career while also being a successful part of their families, their communities, and staying active and healthy. Thus begins a journey of continuous improvement and reflection that is never quite complete!
The Worksoul Manifesto
Agility and the Agile Manifesto has been a key driver in my career thus far, so I thought it would be fitting to create a Worksoul Manifesto that would be the beginning of this journey. The Worksoul Manifesto states that:
"We are revolutionizing the workplace by relentlessly looking for better ways to work that nurture the human spirit. In that journey we value:
- Pursuit of Work-Life Achievement over Work-Life "Balance": We prioritize happiness and well-being as essential drivers of success and acknowledge that achievement and joy can go hand in hand. Thriving individuals lead thriving organizations, and people thrive through achieving goals in both their personal and professional lives.
- Collaboration and Authenticity over Hierarchies and Ego: We foster empathetic and authentic relationships that transcend hierarchical structures. We value open communication, active listening, and collaboration, creating a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone's voice is heard and respected. We believe that a joyful and fulfilled workforce leads to greater creativity, collaboration, and overall success.
- Continuous Learning and Growth over Finding Comfort Zones: We embrace a growth mindset and prioritize continuous learning and personal development. We challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zones, explore new possibilities, and constantly evolve. We can always get better!
- Meaningful Work and Purpose over Punching a Clock: We strive for work that is purposeful and aligned with our values. We seek opportunities to make meaningful contributions that positively impact ourselves, others, and society.
By uncovering better ways of working that focus on cultivating strong personal relationships, we continue to explore deeper meaning in our lives, thrive personally and professionally, and better understand the alignment between our goals and our values."
Where Does Work Fit into Our Journey?
I am the first to admit that people weren't meant to spend our whole lives working. And, in fact, that is NOT what the Worksoul mindset pursues. I do believe though that there is an underlying satisfaction, sense of self worth, confidence, and maturity that people experience through the trials and tribulations that are associated with work. Whether it is the work we do in our jobs or the work we pursue to improve our skills in other areas, people want to achieve and want to feel success.
As we explore better ways of working, we will build products that support the journey while investigating mind models, leadership books, tools, tactics, ideas, and strategies that help us grow as individuals into the best people we can be - ones that strive for achievement and success while doing their best to nurture their souls by using their skills to give back and make the world around them better.
