Positive Psychology, PERMA, and a Building a Healthier Relationship with Work

Positive psychology is a field of psychology that focuses on the scientific study of human well-being, flourishing, and optimal functioning. As we continue our never-ending search for better ways of working and feeding our personal and professional soul, Positive Psychology provides a number of thinking frameworks and workshops that can help us in our pursuits.

In 1998, Dr. Martin Seligman changed the way we approach psychology by focusing on the positive application of psychology to understand what is good vs. the previous focus of psychology solely on mental illness. The subsequent PERMA™ model (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment) in the new study of Positive Psychology provides a framework for how we can think about what drives positive emotions in our lives, and how this model can help us answer questions about our work and our life. As we explore Positive Psychology and the impact on our work, the PERMA™ model is going to be revisited over and over as we explore some deeper ways to cultivate positive emotions, increase engagement, improve our relationships, find meaning in our work and life, and accomplish our goals along the way.

Overview of the PERMA Framework:

Positive Emotion

Positive emotion is a fundamental aspect of positive psychology, emphasizing the importance of experiencing and cultivating positive emotions in our daily lives. Positive emotions, such as joy, gratitude, and contentment, have been shown to enhance well-being, resilience, and overall life satisfaction. Understanding and intentionally cultivating positive emotions can contribute to a more positive outlook and improved mental and emotional health.

Engagement

Engagement refers to the state of being fully absorbed and immersed in an activity, where time seems to fly and one's skills are matched with the challenge at hand. It is a state of flow and optimal experience where individuals experience a deep sense of fulfillment and enjoyment. When individuals are engaged in their work, they are more likely to be productive, motivated, and experience a higher level of job satisfaction.

Relationships

Relationships play a crucial role in positive psychology, as they are essential for our well-being and happiness. Positive relationships provide support, connection, and a sense of belonging, contributing to overall life satisfaction. Building and nurturing positive relationships at work can foster a positive and supportive work environment, improve collaboration, and enhance overall team performance.

Meaning

Finding meaning in our work and lives is a central theme in positive psychology. It involves understanding and aligning our values, strengths, and interests with our daily activities and the broader purpose they serve. Having a sense of meaning and purpose in our work can lead to increased motivation, fulfillment, and a greater sense of satisfaction.

Accomplishment

Accomplishment refers to achieving goals, mastering new skills, and experiencing a sense of competence and achievement. Positive psychology recognizes the importance of setting and pursuing meaningful goals that align with one's values and strengths. Accomplishments provide a sense of pride, enhance self-esteem, and contribute to overall well-being. Recognizing and celebrating accomplishments, both big and small, can fuel motivation, resilience, and a positive outlook on future endeavors.

Short reflection:

As we reflect on our life and our jobs, when we are in the right place, we will feel some connection with each of these concepts and our work life. Perhaps not every day, but our goals should be aligned with finding a job that is not only fulfilling in terms of how much money we make, but also helps us feel positive and puts us in a position to feel a sense of accomplishment.

  1. What are some moments or aspects of your work that bring you joy, satisfaction, or a sense of positivity?
  2. When do you feel most absorbed and fully engaged in your work? What tasks or projects ignite your passion and provide a sense of flow?
  3. How would you describe the quality of your relationships with colleagues, superiors, and clients? Are there any meaningful connections or supportive     interactions that stand out?
  4. Reflect on the deeper purpose or significance behind your work. How does it align with your values and contribute to a greater cause or impact?
  5. What recent achievements or milestones have you experienced in your work? How do these accomplishments contribute to your sense of competence and fulfillment?
